Success or even the very idea of it can be a very scary thing. If we actually attain what we desire then what will we have to hide behind, use as an excuse. We would have to embrace life and ourselves. Maybe dream even bigger.
Being a freelancer comes with all sorts of perks, but very many lows not only financially but emotionally. People generally regard success as how much money you have or have received for the work you do, is it really? That same big company paying the constant salary started as someone's vision too, a risk they took and still take every day. You owe yourself the same kind of risk.
If you have followed my journey online since 2009 you know I celebrate not only every success but every opportunity. I firmly believe you cannot jinx something by saying it out loud, scream it from the rooftop make it come true. Visualise it, manifest it. Believe in yourself and your abilities even when you can't. The term fake it till you make it is real. If it doesn't work out so what, I have more respect for the person who tried then the ones who did nothing but have the most advice and say.
I know the real world is tough money is a serious issue, but it is not the start or end of a dream. I started with nothing, collaborating and working for free gaining as much experience and contacts as I could, nothing is for nothing especially if it is not wasted time. I never had a cell phone for almost a year but am in social media I would literally take selfies ootd pics, and event pics on my friend's phone (or even the waiters and photographers and they would whatsapp it to me). It was embarrassing and sometimes they would tease me but it was my vision and I was going to work as hard as I could even when it was uncomfortable and difficult to see it to fruition. I use to think to myself "I would be chilling on the beach not getting paid might as well be learning something on set and get paid higher later". Those "free" lessons have saved me a fortune in mistakes I never made because I had experienced it before. It created my network which is my strongest asset to date.
So many people have asked me how much I got paid for a gig, did I get paid for a gig (p.s. I think it's rude. Do you ask this to people in other professions?). I also work weird hours so might be sleeping in the day and then people have this attitude of do you not work? Are you not working today? Only to think to myself I just pulled 2 19 hour days in a row and never slept cause I had to prep for day 2. In all honesty still feeling that feeling of Am I working hard enough, although I haven't had a sick day or weekend this year. I have had family send me messages about getting a "real" job or even sent clippings of 9-5 opportunities, but I believed in myself and my vision enough for everyone and myself.
Do the free work, learn, work hard. Wake up and hour earlier and go to sleep an hour later use those two extra hours working on something that makes you feel good, fulfilled. Ask yourself that very old question, What do you want to be when you grow up? Start there and get to work.
With just those 2 hours a day working on something you want to extra you have 706 hours to create something left in 2017. Spend one weekend less a month partying and you will be surprised at the capital you have to invest in yourself.
This is easier said than done we are all tired and have a million responsibilities but trust me when you open that door of potential it will give you more energy for everything else.
I think we are far harder on ourselves because of the opinions of others than what we truly think and feel. We give up on ourselves and our destiny way to quickly. If something is going to take you 100x longer than someone else because A. you doing it the ethical way or B. they had better access or C. whatever reason there is do it anyway 100x later and you will be 100x further from where you started. So start.
I have a lot of people on my facebook that often post job opportunities as their statuses so I am going to start sharing it all so that you can be inspired, make a start, maybe even make a new connection that could lead to a whole new career. Whatever you do just ensure you give it your all.
