2016 has been thee most roller coaster year. Kylie was right, the year of realizing things.
2015 was filled with months and months of non stop work days. I might have gotten 40 days off in last year. It was sheer madness and I realized that I needed to budget time for myself, not only personally but professionally.
That might sound easier then it was for me. Sometimes I get lost in "I am not doing enough, so am I enough" thoughts. Only because I now have a cut off time for work related interactions and emotions. It took a very long time not to work 22 hour days but to put the phone down for at least 7 hours daily (lol I am getting there). I am also only focusing on 4 main things at the moment, when I am use to having a 1000. Although the work load is more intense it feels like less, because it is less projects to work on.
It also does not make it any easier that everyone else is also on this buzz that if you are not publicly saying what you are doing you are not doing anything. I have literally been asked a hundred times why I am not styling a 1000 music videos and ads, "am I ok?"
I wish we would stop glorifying the busy and start respecting the chill. No wonder offline is the new luxury.
Last year I decided I would be focusing on myself and my own brand. After being in front of and behind the camera for 23 years I needed to. I did.
The first thing on my list was to re-look at my current team and collaborations. Not only for my sanity but for the protection of my brand that I invest so much of myself in. I stopped working with a lot of people and also brought in contracts and rules of engagement to protect myself.
The start of the year was spent prepping and launching my website. I did a few really cool brand ads and collaborations, including the Pandora Spring Campaign, being the face of TART's new website, Sunglass Hut SA and Rimmel London at SAFW which was a big deal to me because I have always loved all those brands.
Mid year I spent prepping for and filming a new show on TLC Africa airing on the 22nd of December at 9pm. I was lucky enough not only to be on the show but also to have styled everyone on it. It was such an amazing experience working with Discovery Networks UK again. Super excited to be styling a new show for them being filmed in 2017.
The end of the year was a biggie. I started working with a new brand on something I had very little experience in and fell in love with a new sector in the fashion industry. Although this is something that we have been working on since 2015, 2016 was the year I got to experience it. Unfortunately I cannot say in detail YET what the project is about, I can however say I have never put this much time, energy and love into something before. Let alone had a 10 year plan for a project lol I never even had one for life. It is so exciting but has kept me incredibly busy, hence me being away so long.
I also had a great year with Jimmy Nevis not only styling him for sold out shows and appearances like The Kirstenbosch Sunset Concert but on new projects coming out in 2017.
Then of course last but not least a super fun year on my beloved Hectic Nine 9. This one has my heart. Kids/Teen tv has always been my fave, maybe because I started tv presenting on X-Attitude when I was 11, or maybe because I love to see my impact immediately and with the teens I can. When they come up to me saying they are wearing local or something old they recycled, when they can tell me about fast fashion and about the positive impact them buying local has on our SA market I feel amazing and it makes my heart warm.
Ensure you MAKE time for yourself in the busy that is life. Take the time to re-evaluate that you are on the right path, doing things the right way. The ethical road might be longer and little harder but you need the training to stay at the top.
Legacy is more important than likes.
